Notifications Not Working

Step-by-step troubleshooting for when Vicinity proximity alerts aren't arriving.

4 min read·Updated March 2025

If you're not receiving proximity alerts when you expect to, work through the checklist below. Most issues come down to iOS permissions or settings.

1. Check iOS notification permission

  1. 1Go to Settings → Notifications → Vicinity.
  2. 2Make sure Allow Notifications is turned on.
  3. 3Check that Alerts and Lock Screen are enabled.

2. Check location permission

  1. 1Go to Settings → Vicinity → Location.
  2. 2Make sure it's set to Always (not While Using the App).
  3. 3Confirm Precise Location is on.

3. Check Background App Refresh

  1. 1Go to Settings → General → Background App Refresh.
  2. 2Make sure the master switch is on.
  3. 3Verify Vicinity is also toggled on in the list.

4. Check Focus Mode / Do Not Disturb

If a Focus profile is active, it may be silencing Vicinity. Add Vicinity as an allowed app, or disable Focus temporarily to test.

5. Verify your friend has the correct settings too

Proximity alerts require both users to have the app correctly configured. If you're testing with a friend and neither of you gets an alert, walk through this same checklist on their device.

Still not working?

Try force-quitting Vicinity and reopening it. If the problem persists, try signing out and back in under Profile → Settings → Account. If none of this helps, contact us at hello@usevicinity.com with your device model and iOS version.
